Guillermo del Pino has been a household name for many scouts not only since the U17 World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey. Since then, he has established himself at Cordoba CB in Segunda FEB and played his way onto the radar of college teams in the U.S. as a ‘25 recruit.
He recently connected with Pro Insight’s Florian Kurth to talk about his basketball background, some of his off-court interests, his college aspirations, and much more.
For the next installment of the Pro Insight Q&A series, we present 2025 prospect Guillermo del Pino, from Malaga, Spain:
Pro Insight: You played at the U17s with Spain. What was your impression of the event and how would you rate your individual performance?
Guillermo del Pino: It was a great event and although we didn't get where we wanted, I think we did a good job. Personally, I did not have my best tournament and both the stats and the percentages were not my best version.
PI: How did you initially get into basketball?
GDP: I started when I was three years old, when my father took me to play at school.
PI: Can you share more about your family background?
GDP: In my family, we are my father, my mother and my 15 year old sister.
PI: Are there any professional athletes in your family?
GDP: No.
PI: What do you like to do when you aren’t playing basketball? Any other hobbies?
GDP: I like to watch other sports apart from basketball like soccer, go out with my friends, and read.
PI: How would you describe your game to someone who hasn’t seen you play?
GDP: I am an explosive player who likes to play at a high pace and fastbreak, I am a scoring point guard who can also distribute the game and have a great three-point shot. I also consider myself to be a good defender and I use my hands well.
PI: What would you say is your biggest strength and weakness right now?
GDP: My biggest strength is my shooting and my biggest weakness is my physical.
PI: Do you have a development focus in individual workouts right now?
GDP: I'm working very hard right now on my physique and my ball handling.
PI: Can you imagine going to college one day in the U.S.?
GDP: Yes, I am ready for 2025 class enrollment. I already have some high major offers and I am very happy.
PI: What is your long term goal regarding your basketball career?
GDP: I would like to get to the NBA!
PI: Where do you see yourself in five years?
GDP: In the USA, fighting for my dream.
PI: Do you have any favorite music artists?
GDP: I like reggaeton and Latin trap, for example Myke Towers.
PI: Do you watch much basketball on TV?
GDP: Yes, I like to watch the NBA and the EuroLeague.
PI: Personally, would you say you are more of an introvert or extrovert?
GDP: I’m extroverted.
PI: Who is the most important person in your life?
GDP: My parents.
PI: You grew up basketball-wise mostly with Unicaja Malaga. What does that organization mean to you?
GDP: Unicaja was the place where I grew up as a basketball player, where I matured as a player and person and also where I made the leap to being a professional.
PI: Describe yourself with only three words.
GDP: Hardworking, persevering and generous.
