The number-one ranked player in ESPN’s 2024 high school class, Derik Queen led St. Frances Academy to an undefeated regular season and earned MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year in 2020-21. At 6’9, the versatile forward scored a career-high 56 points on March 12 against Annapolis Area Christian School.
This summer, Queen had the opportunity to work out with fellow Baltimore peers Cam Whitmore, Kwame Evans, Jr., and Carmelo Anthony at The Arena in Summit New York. Heading to a talent-laden Montverde Academy team this fall as a sophomore, Queen will look to help the Eagles defend their GEICO National title.
Pro Insight caught up with Queen during UAA II at FieldhouseUSA in Frisco, TX. Queen, who runs with Team Thrill (MD), showcased his inside-outside game, excellent footwork operating in the mid-post and touch around the rim.
As part of the Pro Insight Q&A series, Queen talked about areas of his game he’s working on, his favorite music artists, his early recruitment and more.
For the next installment of the Pro Insight Q&A series, we present 2024 prospect Derik Queen, from Baltimore, Maryland:
Pro Insight: How have you felt so far during this AAU season?
Derik Queen: I’ve felt pretty good. My team, we’ve been doing pretty good also.
PI: What are you hoping to improve or show college coaches right now?
DQ: I just wanna work on my motor and play better defense. And being more efficient as well.
PI: In what areas of efficiency have you been working on?
DQ: I’ve been working on my jump shot. Like my three pointer was a little streaky, so definitely working on that.
PI: For those who aren’t familiar with your game, describe your strengths and play style.
DQ: Scoring — that’s one of my strengths. Rebounding and passing, as well.
PI: Do you have a defined position at the moment?
DQ: Nah, not really. I think just being versatile and doing a bit of everything.
PI: What are your biggest interests outside of basketball?
DQ: Off the court, I don’t really do too much besides listening to music and playing video games. I’m trying to get stronger, too.
PI: Who are your favorite music artists right now?
DQ: Drake and Lil Baby.
PI: What’s your recruitment update?
DQ: I got offered by Auburn most recently.. I also have DePaul, Maryland, Texas, Virginia Tech, Georgetown, LSU, and Arizona State and interest from Syracuse, Pitt and FSU.
PI: Who has been in touch the most lately?
DQ: Maryland and DePaul.
PI: What will ultimately factor heaviest into your decision?
DQ: I would like to be part of a program that will welcome me as a family and that loves to win.
PI: At the end of the day, what do you hope to be remembered for?
DQ: I want to be remembered as the best basketball player people know.
